Artisanal fishing, based on responsible fishing practices, is the best traditional activity that can be done in harmony with the sustainability of ecosystems. It represents an essential source of food and employment, and a factor of social and economic well-being for millions of people around the world.
In Tunisia, artisanal fishing is presented as subsidence fishing which employs more than 70% of the workforce in the fishing sector. It has contributed over the years to more than 50% of the value of national production.
This activity is confronted not only with the overexploitation of fishing resources requiring legislative frameworks that guarantee their sustainability, but also with social institutional weaknesses. These weaknesses were accentuated by a difficulty in structuring the sector. Within the artisanal fishing community, those most affected are the sea fishermen.
